Patrick Cutrone and a Suso free kick eventually got the better of Cagliari, but Milan found it their most difficult game so far.

The Rossoneri had won all five competitive matches this season between Serie A and Europa League, scoring 13 goals and not conceding any. Jack Bonaventura was injured, with Lucas Biglia and Nikola Kalinic on the bench for the first time, but 19-year-old prodigy Patrick Cutrone retained his place in attack. Cagliari were fresh from a 3-0 defeat to Juventus and had one point at San Siro from 14 visits since a 1-0 win in June 1997.
