Allegri: AC Milan are contenders

Massimiliano Allegri has conceded that Inter remain the team to beat, but believes his Milan side can mount a serious title challenge.

The former Cagliari boss begins his Rossoneri adventure in earnest tomorrow as the San Siro boys start pre-season and he’s in confident mood.

“Inter have something more than Juventus, Roma and us at this moment in time,” he told the Corriere della Sera. “Nevertheless, I think all four of us will be challenging for the Scudetto.

“I’m very calm and hopeful for the season ahead.

“The season that is about to start is an important one for everybody. For myself, given that it is my first at a big club, and the players, who are obliged to prove that they are good enough.

“There needs to be a capacity to make sacrifices and everyone to be at my disposal to achieve results.”

Allegri also claimed he was happy with the squad he will be working with, despite the lack of a significant summer purchase so far.

“The squad is pretty much as it was last season. Added to that are Marco Amelia, Mario Yepes and Sokratis Papastathopoulos,” he noted.

“I’m convinced that all of the players in the squad still have a lot to give.”

The former midfielder also insisted that Ronaldinho and Gennaro Gattuso are in his thoughts for the new campaign despite their uncertain futures.

“As long as Ronaldinho and Gattuso are Milan players then I will be counting on them. I’ll be happy if they stay.

“Ronaldinho has great technical abilities that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.”
