The tournament compiles of 45 minute matches, and took place at the Mapei Stadium. In the first of the three matches that made up the competition, Milan faced off against Celta Vigo, and looked the more accomplished side throughout. However, after spurning several chances to take the lead, with the Mexican the main culprit, Milan were made to rely on penalty kicks to see off the Spaniards. At present, Milan have nothing but their rich history to fall back on. Attracting the best players on the planet is proving elusive and challenging for the Scudetto seems light years away. It is unquestionable that the challenge facing newly appointed manager Vincenzo Montella to re-energise the club and make Milan a top, top team again is enormous.

The squad is littered with an abundance of average players which ultimately reflect the clubs transfer policy in recent years – taking players for free or on loan. Other than the impressive goal outlay of Carlos Bacca, who netted 17 times in 36 appearances last season, nobody else really came to the fore.

The ego of Berlusconi has also been a major factor behind the instability at the club with regular sackings of bosses becoming the norm, often replacing them with managers who have little to no experience, but had a strong connection with the supporters and a hark back to the glory years. Think Clarence Seedorf and Flippo Inzaghi.

Success never comes overnight and there is an evidential lack of leadership. Montella’s time in charge of Fiorentina where he guided the club to three consecutive fourth-place league finishes suggests he could bring solidity to the San Siro, but the golden days of Nesta, Kaka and Shevchenko have never seemed so distant.

In Italy, only the top three secure themselves a place in Europe’s Premier Club competition. Last season’s appalling campaign saw the Rossoneri finish seventh, so to jump four places with the current playing personnel is virtually insurmountable. Just getting themselves back into any European competition would represent progress, given that it is now three years since this great club appeared on such a stage.

The upcoming campaign holds great significance – a decade will have passed since the might of Milan were last crowned Kings of Europe. They will be a waiting a while longer.
