AC Milan miss out on Trofeo TIM after Sassuolo defeat
12.8 || webmaster

With the Serie A season just a matter of weeks away, AC Milan stepped up their preparations for the new campaign by taking part in the 16th edition of the Trofeo TIM alongside Spanish side Celta Vigo and Sassuolo. Despite seeing off the La Liga side on penalties following a goalless draw, a 3-2 defeat to their Italian rivals meant they missed out on the trophy. The tournament compiles of 45 minute matches, and took place at the Mapei Stadium. Vincenzo Montella’s side take on Torino in their first league fixture on August 21, with the Rossoneri favourites in the football betting to claim all three points.

In the first of the three matches that made up the competition, Milan faced off against Celta Vigo, and looked the more accomplished side throughout. Starting with a centre back pairing of Gabriel Paletta and Luca Antonelli, and with Carlos Bacca leading the line, Milan were dominant throughout. However, after spurning several chances to take the lead, with the Mexican the main culprit, Milan were made to rely on penalty kicks to see off the Spaniards. With Diego Lopez showing his credentials for the season ahead, it was only Japanese international Keisuke Honda who failed from twelve yards. Milan are the 5/6 favourites for victory over Torino in the football betting with bookmakers Coral, however they will have to find their shooting boots before the big kick off. A classic Coral bet of 33/1 on Milan claiming their first Serie A title since 2011 certainly looks unlikely given the spending of reigning champions Juventus.

For their second match of the day, Milan made six changes for their encounter with Sassuolo. Montella’s men found themselves two goals up inside ten minutes, thanks to a brace from M'Baye Niang. However, this was as good as it got for Milan, and goals from Sassuolo trio Diego Falcinelli, Politano and Marcelo Trotta made it 3-2 to the home side. Matters were compounded for Milan after Niang was forced off injured early in the first half with a suspected hamstring injury. With such a high scoring contest, the football betting at Coral for Milan’s opening fixture is changing all the time, with a 4/1 bet for the home side to score over 3 goals looking attractive.

Elsewhere for the Rossoneri, Montella looks set to battle Juventus for the signature of Boca Juniors winger Rodrigo Bentancur. It is thought that the Uruguayan will cost in the region of 15 million Euros. Meanwhile, Milan remain outsiders in the football betting with Coral to sign Germany’s Julian Draxler.

Why AC Milan should do everything they can to sign Isco
11.8 || webmaster

AC Milan ultras

It has been a positive summer for everybody associated with AC Milan. Earlier this month, the club confirmed that the Sino-Europe Investment Management Changxing group have agreed a deal to buy 99% of Milan’s shares from Silvio Berlusconi, and most fans will be happy at this latest move. The Italian giants will now have plenty of opportunities to invest heavily in the transfer window but their £176million worth of debt has also been wiped out completely by their new Chinese investors.

Now, they should focus on bringing a number of top stars to the San Siro as AC Milan look to work their way back to the top of Italian football. One of the names being linked with a move to Milan this summer is Isco. The Real Madrid man has struggled for regular game-time under Zinedine Zidane and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the Spaniard look elsewhere for regular football ahead of the new campaign. Whilst Milan aren’t in the Champions League, recent events may be enough to convince the big names to join the club.

On his day, Isco is a supreme talent and the 24-year-old would give Milan a competent, creative threat in the final third. Okay, so he isn’t going to go and score 15 goals a season but Isco’s intelligence and ability to read the game could help to create plenty of chances for the Italian side this year. As of August 9th, Milan are 15/8 to finish in the top three in bet365's Serie A betting markets, and Isco will certainly give them the best opportunity to climb the division and hold their own against the likes of Napoli, Roma and city rivals Inter.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Milan are no longer an elite club, but they can be. They have the facilities, the knowledge and the experience of performing at the very top; they just need the players and support staff to back up their claims. Isco’s arrival would potentially help to attract other big names to the San Siro and the Rossoneri will be expecting head coach Vincenzo Montella to invest heavily this summer. With the backing of the new Chinese investors, there’s absolutely no reason why Milan should be sitting back in the transfer window. They NEED to target a few top stars...

via GIPHY

If nothing else, Isco could be the marquee signing that AC Milan need to send out a statement of intent ahead of the new campaign. The Italian giants are widely regarded as one of the greatest clubs in European football history and they have been stuck in the doldrums for far too long. It is now time for Milan to rise again and compete with Italy’s top clubs, and for that to happen, they must place their emphasis on signing Isco. The Spaniard should be their number one priority.

Europe has never seemed so distant
4.8 || webmaster

It’s better to burn out than to fade away. However, the laconic decline of AC Milan has seem them become a forgotten force on a European stage that they once dominated. They used to be everyone’s first pick when picking an accumulator or bet for the weekend. Owner of the club and media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi continues to generate negative publicity away from the San Siro, with their regression on the treasured turf of Italy’s largest stadium a permanent reminder of their progressive diminishing amongst the elite.

The significance of the upcoming campaign should not be underestimated, both in terms of its historical connotation and the Rossoneri’s attempts to bridge the expanding gap between themselves and the leading pack in Italy. The titanic achievements of Juventus winning an historic back-to-back double has only served them to strengthen further – capturing Gonzalo Higuain from runners-up Napoli for an incredible £75 million.

AS Roma have become a model of consistency and will once again turn to their talisman Francesco Totti for inspiration, whereas arch-rivals Inter can at least use the magnetism of having secured themselves a berth in the Europa League to re-establish their quest to reach the summit of Italian football.

At present, Milan have nothing but their rich history to fall back on. Attracting the best players on the planet is proving elusive and challenging for the Scudetto seems light years away. It is unquestionable that the challenge facing newly appointed manager Vincenzo Montella to re-energise the club and make Milan a top, top team again is enormous.

The squad is littered with an abundance of average players which ultimately reflect the clubs transfer policy in recent years – taking players for free or on loan. Other than the impressive goal outlay of Carlos Bacca, who netted 17 times in 36 appearances last season, nobody else really came to the fore.

The ego of Berlusconi has also been a major factor behind the instability at the club with regular sackings of bosses becoming the norm, often replacing them with managers who have little to no experience, but had a strong connection with the supporters and a hark back to the glory years. Think Clarence Seedorf and Flippo Inzaghi.

Success never comes overnight and there is an evidential lack of leadership. Montella’s time in charge of Fiorentina where he guided the club to three consecutive fourth-place league finishes suggests he could bring solidity to the San Siro, but the golden days of Nesta, Kaka and Shevchenko have never seemed so distant.

In Italy, only the top three secure themselves a place in Europe’s Premier Club competition. Last season’s appalling campaign saw the Rossoneri finish seventh, so to jump four places with the current playing personnel is virtually insurmountable. Just getting themselves back into any European competition would represent progress, given that it is now three years since this great club appeared on such a stage.

The upcoming campaign holds great significance – a decade will have passed since the might of Milan were last crowned Kings of Europe. They will be a waiting a while longer.
