The lender in question is Elliot Management, a New York based hedge fund, and Elliot has taken the step of repossessing the Luxembourg company that Li Yonghong used to purchase the club in the first place. So what does all that mean to the millions of AC Milan fans who just want to see the club return to winning ways in the middle and stability behind the scenes? Simple – we are Under New Management. And it could be the best news all year.

Cash injection

Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate. That might sound reasonable enough to you or me when we are visiting an instant payout casino online or putting a couple of pounds on a game at a bookmaker. But when a company has already invested hundreds of millions into a club and seen no return, you might think they would be reluctant to throw any more money into the pot.

However, Elliot has a long term game plan. The business knows that what it has invested already will be lost forever unless the club it put back on its feet, and this is why it has decided to get directly involved. The fund has a good track record of turning around businesses that have suffered through mismanagement. This will be the first time they have got quite so hands-on in running an entire venture, but given the profile of the club, they will be putting everything behind getting it right.

The fund’s first course of action will be to inject a further €50 million into the club to stabilise its finances, and this decisive action has allayed fears that the future viability of the club might be in jeopardy.

In for the long haul

As an established and successful hedge fund, this is a deviation from Elliot’s normal way of doing business. Financial commentators assumed the club would be immediately sold off, and some even entertained the possibility of it being liquidated, and the assets sold off to try to recover money. Elliot has seen a better way forward for everyone, however.

Elliot’s founder, Paul Singer, said that his company: “looks forward to the challenge of realising the club’s potential and returning the club to the pantheon of top European football clubs where it rightly belongs.”

There is still a long road ahead, but AC fans can take heart that the coming year is looking more promising than the one we have put behind us.
