With two Champions League trophies in the last 14 years and seven times winners of Europe’s top club prize, AC Milan can rightly be considered European football royalty. No other Italian club comes close to their record. Even the all-conquering Juventus have lost both of their recent Champions League finals and still have just one European Cup to their name. But with AC Milan finishing in a hugely disappointing sixth place in Serie A in 2016-17, 23 points behind the Champions League spots and 28 adrift of champions Juve, the Rossoneri will once again not be playing in the competition. It’s the fourth season in a row that the once mighty Milan have missed out, so what needs to change at the San Siro?
Thanks to the deep pockets of the club’s new Chinese owners, manager Vincenzo Montella has begun by changing the look of his squad. In July Milan shocked Serie A by signing Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci from rivals Juve for £35 million. That sent a strong message to the rest of the league that they’re targeting a swift return to Europe’s top table in 2018. It also gave Milan the defensive leader they’ve lacked ever since Thiago Silva was sold in 2012 and should see them concede much less than the 45 goals that went in during 2016-17. Playing behind Bonucci will be Italy’s top teenage goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma. The club convinced the 18-year-old star to sign a new contract this summer, which means Milan retain a world-class keeper that many experts thought would be off to Juventus as the Rossoneri cashed in on the youngster. They didn’t and that was a very smart piece of business.
Of the players that failed to impress the fans and coaching staff at the San Siro last season, time could soon be called on M’Baye Niang’s spell at the club. The midfielder joined Watford on loan in January and could seal a permanent switch to the Premier League this summer. Jose Sosa, Gustavo Gomez and Matias Fernandez also didn’t hit the expected heights after joining in 2016. Montella’s recent midfield recruitment has seen Ricardo Rodriguez, Andrea Conti, Franck Kessie, Lucas Biglia and Hakan Calhanoglu arrive to boost the middle of the park. The 19-year-old midfielder Manuel Locatelli also made a big name for himself last season and Milan want him to follow Donnarumma and commit his future to the club.
Montella was a dangerous goalscorer in his playing days and he’ll hope Andre Silva – a £30 million capture from Porto – will settle quickly in Italy and start hitting the net. Silva links up with Cristiano Ronaldo playing for Portugal so if another big attacking star, like Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerik Aubameyang or Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata, also joined Milan he should handle the pressure well. Carlos Bacca was Milan’s top scorer with just 13 goals in 2016-17 and that’s not a stat that will win league titles. If the Italians can snare a proven striker like Aubameyang or Morata, bookmakers like 888sport will drastically cut their odds of Milan landing their first Serie A title since 2011.

Milan have officially signed Bayer Leverkusen star Hakan Calhanoglu on a contract to June 2021, reportedly for €20m plus incentives.
“It’s my first time in Italy, it’s very nice. The museum is very big with some big players and I’m very happy to be here now,” Calhanoglu told reporters outside Casa Milan.

The youngster already has four Italy caps to his name but is being targeted by a number of top European clubs and it will be a measure of Milan’s ambition to see if they can manage to hold onto him.
Juve have dominated Italian football for the past six seasons and there is nothing to suggest that the Old Lady will not continue to challenge for honours, but it is now the likes of Roma and Napoli that are snapping at their heels with Milan down among the also-rans.
The fact they finished above Inter is one crumb of comfort but hardly likely to appease the huge fan base that crave silverware.
Milan can return to the summit but it will not be an overnight fix and the new owners must be prepared for a few more frustrating years before they can mount a sustained challenge for honours.
